Eating Helpline: Mental Health - Eating Support

Mental Health Eating Disorders
While eating disorders may sound like an obsession with food and body weight or shape, it is more complicated than what it seems. Most eating disorders happen due to underlying mental illness. As such, they require medical interventions. If left untreated, mental health-related eating disorders can lead to severe health problems and even death.

Caring for people with eating disorders is a challenging task. As a caregiver for a loved one with the condition, you know how obsessed they are with food or the intense fear of gaining weight. For example, Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are the two common types of eating disorders. The symptoms for these conditions include fear of gaining weight, the use of dangerous ways to decrease body weight, and purging behaviors. Eating disorders can affect the person cognitively, resulting in anxiety, panic, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

ExtendaTouch is an online support group for caregivers to meet and exchange useful information and provide emotional support to each other. If you are feeling overwhelmed or exhausted caring for someone with mental health eating disorder, our members can give you emotional support. They can also share helpful information, ideas, and resources with you.
