Military Caregiver Month: Breaking Through Burnout

American Red Cross May 2021

This month, the American Red Cross wants to recognize all of the caregivers who give their heart, time and resources to take care of wounded or injured U.S. service members or veterans. Being a caregiver is a difficult job and the Red Cross is there to support you through your caregiver journey.

The Red Cross Military and Veteran Caregiver Network provides resources, connection and training for caregivers in need. Through this network, the Red Cross seeks to decrease isolation and maximize connection and knowledge through both online and in-person meetings. Over the last year, the network has grown leaps and bounds, nearly tripling in its number of active participants.

As a wife, mom of five kids and caregiver to her Marine Corps veteran husband, Nikki Stephens knows firsthand that life is not without its ups and downs. Stephens provides an inside look into the daily needs of caregivers across the country. “In my experience of being a caregiver, it’s not necessarily a matter of if you get burned out. It’s when will you get burned out?. Someone said to me once, do you have two minutes [to take] for yourself? I then had to ask myself, am I valuable enough to give myself two minutes?”

In honor of U.S. military and veteran communities across the world, the American Red Cross and Alo Moves are now offering a free one-year subscription to mental wellness courses such as yoga, fitness, meditation practices and more to all service members, veterans, their families and caregivers.
