Celebrating Easter in South Texas

Caregiving update: This week, I’ve been in South Texas, visiting my mom who has advanced Alzheimer’s and helping my family care for her. I’ve been taking her out to lunch, playing crossword puzzles and quizzes and enjoying her company.Tonight, the memory care facility where she lives had an Easter celebration and barbecue for the residents and their families. The facility has decorated outside to the nines, which makes everyone, residents and family alike, feel a breath of fresh air. We ate dinner outside and enjoyed the beautifully decorated gardens. My mom has macular degeneration, has trouble hearing and understanding words, cannot stand or walk, and has lost her short term memory. Fortunately, her long term memory is still relatively intact. The time we spend doing crossword puzzles together (eight today) keeps her occupied and feeling much less isolated. Although I speak to her daily when I’m home using Amazon shows, our in-person time is incredibly precious for both of us. My goal as her caregiver is to bring her peace of mind, add light and laughter to the hard working CNAs and staff, and make each hour I’m visiting count. Today was a very good day all around!
